Happy Happy Happy From Now On

I love New Year’s Day – because it starts with my favorite dish – ozoni, and also with the feeling of a fresh start.

Happy New Year everyone out there and at home. Happy forever!

Here’s a video that pal Jalna did a few years ago when she used to work for my classmate Edwin (and now she is enjoying retirement). It makes me happy:

    • Wow – that is SO unusual for a Japanese family! I really love it and part of the reason is that I love mochi so much. I just wish mochi was healthier but, alas, it is an indulgence for me. Coming up soon is Chinese New Year with gau! I love gau, too, and my Chinese friends bring over “loafs” for me which I eat with abandon.

  1. I have never eaten ozoni but it sounds delicious. We don’t have any traditional New Year’s food that we eat. This year we happened to eat Asian cuisine but from a different country than Japan. We had Korean bibimbap.

    • Other families make ozoni in very different ways. I like the plain and simple – chicken broth from a can (lol) added to boiled dried scallops and reconstituted shiitake mushroom with mizuna (a pleasant green stalky vegetable) and mochi (the star of the show). Korean bibimbap is very good too!
