Oldies

I will soon be old enough to collect the maximum amount of Social Security benefits. Seven decades old.

I walk past windows and if there is a mirror, I sometimes see a senior citizen dressed rather nicely and then I realize that it is me in the reflection. Ouch! Am I THAT old woman?

Yep, I am. And I am growing up and learning to accept it and embrace it. Getting older is quite wonderful. The hidden “rules” of youth such as not farting in public are relaxed and we learn to chuckle at those gastric escapes when they occur.

And old songs that we forgot come into our ear space with the wonders of the internet, such as this oldie by The Seekers that brings back penguin feelings that Uncle and I shared, “I’ll Never Find Another You.”

  1. OK, I’m older than you and consider you a baby yet. 🙂
(You’re the same age as my baby brother.)
I don’t get to collect social security because I worked as a teacher in Illinois. I could not opt into social security for the years I was teaching. However, I was part of the Teacher Retirement System so it’s OK… unless Chicago goes broke.
It’s so weird to look in the mirror and see skin sagging. Sigh… I feel like I’ve aged faster during the pandemic. Sigh….

    • I always think that we are the same age – though you are wiser.

Funny when I look in the mirror I don’t see sagging skin (I don’t wear my glasses in the bathroom.). However, when I am out and see my reflection, I get a bit of old lady shock. Especially in well lit department stores. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I don’t shop much anymore.

  2. While I have given up caring about a lot of how the general public perceives me, I still get embarrassed farting in public so I still have some aging to do!

  3. I totally remember that song! Thanks for sharing!
I did wait until I turned 70 late last year so getting the max too….and perhaps we’ll get 9.6% increase next year!

  4. Congrats Aunty on getting to 70 before grabbing that bigger check from Social Security. Only 3% of folks wait that long. I have just under 2 more years to get there. Linda in Kansas

    • I really used to believe that Social Security wouldn’t be around but here it is, still alive and kicking. They will just keep on printing money so it will be around for my kids now.
