Riding the Rail with Esther

Today, thanks to the Department of Transportation and Alana, we got to ride Skyline, Honolulu’s new rail system.

It was really neat! We went from the Aloha Stadium to Kapolei in 21 minutes and back in a smooth comfortable ride. We had birdseye views of places that could not be seen otherwise.

I was one of the constant grumblers about the system from the start but I ate crow today and thoroughly enjoyed the round trip. I plan to load up a senior Holo card for one way trips that cost $1, or opt for a $35 annual senior pass and use it to ride to Kapolei, catch an Uber to the shopping center or theatres there, eat ono Filipino food at Julie’s, and return to town (currently the Aloha Stadium).

Here is a short video of the segment from Leeward Community College to Pearl Highlands. I hope that you enjoy the ride!

  1. Awesome photo of the three of you, by the way. Am suffering extreme vertigo right now after probably pushing myself too much scheduling all my trip posts about Tokyo. Doggone it! I’m supposed to stay away from too much screen time.

  2. We waited over an hour last week getting a senior HOLO card. We haven’t ridden it yet, BUT now that I’ve seen your post will have to try it! Art’s good buddy and classmate saying he hoped he would be alive to see it operating. Sadly, he passed away recently. I’m thinking we should ride it in his memory… maybe with his widow.

    • If you get on at Pearl City, I suppose it would be good to get off at Aloha Stadium on a day when the Swap Meet is open. Although it is very hot nowadays.

Too bad Art’s classmate didn’t get to see it in action.

  3. Mahalo for taking us along. It looks like a big jump to get off and onto the platform, but it must actually be pretty close and safe. Linda in Kansas

    • Aloha Linda! For this special ride we could only get on and off at the initial terminal. There were stairs, escalators, and an elevator for ascent and descent. I am not sure about the other stations but I am assuming they also had the same. After the doors open, the platform is level to the train and my 103 year old friend had no problem walking off. If she was in a wheelchair, she could just roll off. They also had the middle section for bikers to store their bikes during the ride. Pretty cool!
