Aunty speaks very poor Japanese and makes up stuff. So, taihen potter, in my lingo is “REALLY great potter”. This film was made in 1970 and the artist died in 1978. He created his compound after living abroad for 3 years and did ceramics from scratch to kiln. He produced thousands of pieces, each one with his hand in it.
Amazing.
This was a really interesting video. He really was amazingly prolific. I have to say I’m not quite liking some of those designs though. I do love how he’s letting his grandkids try their hand at the craft. I wonder if they inherited his talent.
Yup, I agree and wouldn’t be willing to pay $1000 for a teacup but the process and joy of ceramics makes me want to play with clay.
Too long to watch at work (hehehe) I gotta wait until I go home.
I used to take ceramics from some local artists waaaaay back. Brain always works better than the hand but did enjoy making heavy cups, bowls and ashtrays, though. I signed up for to join the one at Church of the Crossroads and was put on the waiting list. Would you believe they finally called a little while ago (about 30 YEARS later) to tell me there was an opening. Every so often I kinda wish I told them okay.
I am in the Hawaii Potters Guild (by Church of the Crossroads). Now the classes are offered in a lottery system so you apply for a class (or two or three) and if your application is pulled, you are in! Except right now, because of Covid restrictions, only 3 hours per week of studio time is offered to current members. Please try again next year when it opens up again. Would be so fun to be with you in a class together!
Ho! Such a prolific taihen master potter! I would love to sip tea from one of his cups.
Prolific, famous, and nice. Maybe you will find one of his teacups at the swap meet!
